History

PPARC was established in April 1999 by integrating the Upper Atmosphere and Space Research Center (established in 1973), the Onagawa Geomagnetic Observatory (established in 1957), and the observatories of the Department of Geophysics, Graduate School of Science, which had been conducting observations and research on the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere, planetary radio waves, and variations in the Earth’s magnetic field.

Chronology

1980Kawatabi Jupiter Radio Observatory, Department of Geophysics, was newly established.

1932 Mukoyama Observatory attached to the Faculty of Science (Yagiyama, Sendai) established; geomagnetic observation begins.
1947 Onagawa Earthquake and Tsunami Geomagnetic Observatory attached to the Faculty of Science was established.
1956 Night-light Observatory attached to the Faculty of Science (at the foot of Mt. Zao) was established and started sweeping sky observation of oxygen green line.
1957 Geomagnetic Observatory attached to the Faculty of Science was established.
1961 Geomagnetic Observatory moved to the present location (Kirigasaki, Onagawa)
1973 Research Institute for Upper Atmospheric Physics (Division of Upper Atmospheric Physics) was established, and the Luminous Observatory was reorganized as Zao Observatory.
1974 Radio observation of Jupiter started at Zao Observatory.
1977 Zao observatory started 1km interferometric observations of Jupiter’s radio waves.
